One afternoon last month, hundreds of students at Timber Creek High School in Orlando poured into the campus’s sprawling central courtyard to hang out and eat lunch. For members of an extremely online generation, their activities were decidedly analog. In May, Florida passed a law requiring public school districts to impose rules barring student cellphone use during class time. This fall, Orange County Public Schools — which includes Timber Creek High — went even further, barring students from using cellphones during the entire school day. In interviews, a dozen Orange County parents and students all said they supported the no-phone rules during class.

Florida students now need parental permission to use a nickname in school. The new rule is thanks to legislation approved by the state's governor who famously goes by his nickname. The rule also applies to transgender students who want to go by a preferred name instead of a legal name. The form also applies to transgender students who do not want to use their legal name, the school district said in the memo, FOX 35 reported. The same goes for parents and students in Seminole County, Florida, who got a similar email on Tuesday morning from their school board, People reported.

The family of a California public defender who died while celebrating his first wedding anniversary in Mexico believes he was the victim of a "brutal crime," their lawyer said Tuesday. The liaison, who is not identified in the statement, told the family that Blair died of severe head trauma and that his case had been forwarded to prosecutors for a possible homicide investigation, the statement said. Blair's family plans to carry out its own independent investigation, hiring a private investigator and a forensic pathologist, Scarsone said. Orange County Public Defender Martin Schwarz told The Register that Blair had worked for the public defender’s office since 2017, the year he passed the bar exam. His wife, Kimberly, also worked for the public defender’s office, Schwarz told the newspaper.
